Air Cooled Multimedia Helmets
Imagine a hot summer day. You are on the road riding your bike. As per the safety regulations you are wearing a helmet. The helmet may be of the highest standard in terms of safety but when it comes to comfort it still rather not wear a helmet at all. Restrictive stuffy and generally a good 10°c hotter inside than it is outside, helmets are fast becoming the most despise safety measure ever.Air Cooled Multimedia Helmets
I have a solution for this paradox by creating a helmet that not only offers maximum safety but also incorporates supreme comfort, so much that it has a mini air-conditioning system for good measure. These helmets have temperature sensors which will sense the external temperatures and will adjust the cooling system so as to maintain a constant normal temperature inside. Regulation helmets are equipped with heavy padding which absorb shock or impact, the new helmet utilizes stuffy pads with packets of water, which brace the head on impact and at the same time, can be used for cooling at various temperatures allowing the rider to “Keep the Head Cool”. The cooling mechanism is courtesy a semiconductor which works with 12v and have Germanium and Silicon, which are doped to form p-n junctions. This setup forms two junctions, a hot one and a cold junction. The cold junction is kept inside the helmet just above the water bags and the hot junction outside to a heat sink. This can reduce the temperature of 45°c to 15°c at the max. The helmets are also equipped with mini amplifiers and stereo speakers systems which can magnify the sound outside the helmet, so that the rider can hear the horns of other vehicles clearly (which is not audible in other helmets). These amplifiers may also be modified as miniature FM radios.
I hope that this helmet will be an innovative and cost effective alternative to normal helmets.
Most of the riders are not using the helmets due to the following major problems,
It is observed that there is a rise of temperature inside the helmet while using it during the day times. It was found that the helmet chamber has almost 10 degree rise of temperature when compared to the atmospheric temperature. Due to this temperature rise the following problems are occurred,
- Sweating continuously
- Bad smell due to sweating
The helmets inside chamber consists of fabrics and sponges which will absorb the sweat and will get damaged and also will give bad smell during the course of its use. This will make the rider not to use the helmet at all.
- Hair loss
Many of the riders experienced the problem of hair loss while using the helmets continuously, this is mainly due to the chamber temperature.
- Head ache and giddiness
- Breathing problems, Burning sensation to Eyes and Ears
This will Lead to irritation to the rider which will end up in accidents.
- Since all the openings to the body like ears, nose etc. are closely covered by the helmet, the heat will be transmitted to the body which will rise the body temperature.
2. Restricts the sounds of Horn
This is another pathetic situation that while using helmets riders will not be able to hear the horns of other vehicles and will lead to major accidents. This will force the rider not to use the helmets.
3. Helmet Chamber size is not suited to all (front section)
It is observed that out of 1000 people, minimum of 400 are using specs (article from India Today). The helmet design is not at all considering the area to accommodate the specs, which forces the rider in a state of dilemma- Whether to use helmet or to use the specs?
4. Lack of Comfort
Normal helmets uses thermocoal and hard sponges for comfortness, this is less sensitive to vibrations and shocks. The rider will have a congested feeling due to tight packing of these materials. The heat remains trapped in this area. Here we can analyze that majority of the problems are arise due to the chamber
temperature. The riders are refusing to use the helmets mainly due to the unbearable temperature inside the chamber. The riders are least bothered about safety and gives more value for comfortness. This is a bad situation, we have to overcome this only by redesigning the helmets and also by incorporating more features within the helmets which make the rider to use the helmets always, thereby attaining safety riding conditions.
Features of the New Design
1. Air conditioning facility which makes the rider to use the helmets in sunny days.
2. Built-in sensor which will sense the external temperature and maintains an optimal temperature inside the helmet.
3. Air heater change-over which will help the rider to use the helmet in tropical regions.
4. Specialized helmet chamber so as to accommodate the spectacles of the rider.
5. Inbuilt amplifier and microphone which will amplify the sound, so that the rider can easily hear the horns of other vehicles and also with this he can listen to the pinion rider.
6. Usage of water packets instead of hard sponge packing decreases heat trapping inside the helmet. This increases the comfortness as well as safety against sudden shock loads.
7. The water which is being circulated by the cooling unit serves the purpose of constantly cooling the chamber.
7. Optional connection is available for attaching one more air conditioned helmet for the pinion.
